Irish weather keeps your gutters busy

Wet, windy weather means gutters work hard all year. When they are clear they quietly carry rain off the roof and away from your walls and foundations. When they block, that water ends up where it does damage. Regular cleaning prevents overflow, damp and roofline repairs that cost far more later.

Twice a year suits most homes

For most houses, clear and check the gutters twice a year: once in late spring and again in late autumn after the leaves are down. Some homes need more:

• Plenty of trees nearby: leaves, seeds and twigs fill gutters fast, and a heavily wooded site may need three or four checks a year
• Coastal exposure: salt air and strong winds wear gutters, brackets and fixings harder
• Older houses: timber fascias, older gutter systems and complicated rooflines need a closer eye

New builds need maintenance too. Modern uPVC guttering drains well but still gathers moss, roof grit and silt, and an early check can catch a poor fall or a loose bracket before it causes trouble.

Warning signs you can spot from the ground

You do not need a ladder to see most gutter problems:

• Water spilling over the edge in rain, a sign of a blockage or a downpipe that is not draining
• Green, black or dark streaks on the wall below the gutter from repeated overflow
• Gutters sagging between brackets, pulling off the fascia or parting at the joints
• Damp high on an inside wall, peeling paint or ceiling marks near the roofline

Catch these early and it is often a simple clean or a small repair rather than bigger work.

What happens if gutters stay blocked

Water that cannot drain spills onto fascia boards, walls and brickwork. Over time that rots timber, washes out pointing, stains render and brings damp indoors. At ground level it pools beside the house instead of going into the drains. If water is getting inside rather than just overflowing outside, have the roof checked as well.

What a proper gutter service includes

A real gutter service is more than pulling out a few handfuls of leaves. We check for:

• Blockages and built-up debris
• Leaking or parted joints
• Loose or broken brackets
• Sagging sections
• Blocked downpipes
• Water not flowing to the outlets
• Damage to the fascias and soffits behind

Once cleared, the water should run freely to the downpipes and away from the house. If sections are cracked or keep causing trouble, repair or a new gutter system is the better long-term answer.

Homes that need more frequent checks

Semi-detached and terraced houses often share one gutter run across two or more homes, so a blockage next door can overflow on yours: it pays to check the whole run. After a bad storm, look at the gutters from the ground for anything sagging, damaged or overflowing. Build a gutter check into your spring and autumn jobs and most problems never get the chance to start.
